Most of us learned it as a list of requests. Read it next to Israel's story and the requests start lining up.
"Our Father" โ "Israel is my son, my firstborn" (Exodus 4:22)
"Give us this day our daily bread" โ manna, gathered one day at a time
"Forgive us our debts" โ release, for people who knew what debt slavery was
"Lead us not into temptation" โ forty years of testing in the wilderness
"Deliver us from the evil one" โ a people pulled out of Pharaoh's grip
Jesus has just come out of his own wilderness in Matthew 4.
Now he teaches his followers to pray like a people on the way out of slavery.
And this time the slave master is sin, and Jesus is leading the new Exodus.

Enough for today, from a Father who rules on earth the way he already rules in heaven.
That's the trust Israel learned in the desert, and the trust Jesus puts in our mouths every time we pray it.
Which line will you pray differently this week?
