The national debt didn’t simply appear one morning at $40 trillion. It is a Frankenstein assembled over generations, with each administration adding pieces and the interest on those pieces continuing to grow long after the president who incurred the debt has left office. This graphic tries to capture that history by assigning new borrowing to the president in office and then allowing the interest attributable to that borrowing to follow it forward through time. It isn’t a claim that presidents single-handedly “caused” these amounts. Congress writes budgets, presidents inherit commitments, and wars, recessions and emergencies matter enormously. It is simply an attempt to answer an interesting question: If we could trace today’s debt backward, including the accumulated interest on what each administration added, whose pieces would make up the $40 trillion monster standing in front of us today?

Kim Moon Everyone is trying to shelter Trumps #s while pushing the obama biden numbers... The debt is lagging indicator... Obama had to deal with the Iraq war that was put on the credit card by 8 years of the Bush administration. On top of that was the unchecked de-regulation of Bush and the housing bubble that caused the recession led to spending never considered by Obama.. He was forced into spending to right the ship (which is oftenthe case with Democratic Adminstirations after the Republicans), then Biden had the same issue with Covid after Trump...Biden didnt give out the Covid money... that was all republican trump... Biden did the Infratstructure bill, but still was forced by a republican congress to make the majority of it about Tax breaks instead of actual spending on roads and bridges... Now Trump comes up with the Big ABSOLUTELY awful bill that added another Trillion to the debt as tax breaks and here we are.... So before you just hang a number on a PREZ, take a closer look at why they exist. This has been happening since Reagan.... the one person that started this decline into being a Hell state economy and fostering the first trillionaire... 14h ago
