미국에서 2024년에 펜타닐(강력한 신종 마약) 때문에 죽은 사람이 4만8000명 수준. 거의 베트남전 사망 미군 수준이라고. 그만큼 강력하고 끔찍한 마약.
그런데 이탈리아에서는 같은 기간 단 두 명만 이 약물로 사망. 유통이 거의 되지 않았기 때문. 이탈리아가 마약 청정지역이라서가 아님. 이탈리아 마피아가 펜타닐 유통을 강력하게 통제하기 때문. 자신들이 판매하는 마약 사업에 방해가 되기 때문에 펜타닐 유통업자들을 처단(!)해 버리는 것. 이유가 몇가지 있음.
1. 펜타닐은 치사량이 극소량. 즉, 마약을 처음 시도하는 초보자(?) 사망률이 높은데, 사망률이 높아지면 수사 압박이 거세짐. 그래서 위험한 마약을 마피아들이 선제적으로 통제.
2. 코카인과 헤로인 등 마피아가 꽉 잡고 있는 유통망을 지켜야 함
3. 펜타닐 중독자들이 일찍 죽는 경우가 많아서 상대적으로 오래 돈벌이가 되는 기존 마약 고객을 보호
좋다고는 못하겠으나, 그래도 최악은 아닌 듯.
