Transcript

0:00 Two books that explain how the world

0:02 actually works. The first book is Why

0:04 Nations Fail: The Origins of Power,

0:06 Prosperity, and Poverty.

0:08 In this book, the author shows it's not

0:10 actually about location, resources, or

0:12 culture. It all comes down to whether a

0:14 country's system lets everyday people

0:17 build wealth or just protects elites.

0:20 The second book is Debt: The First 5,000

0:22 Years. In this book, the author shows

0:24 that IOUs or virtual debt came thousands

0:28 of years before physical coins,

0:30 completely flipping how we think of

0:31 power, wealth, and morality.

0:34 Read this book, you will completely

0:35 change how you view money.

@andresbustamante6077 Why Nations Fail and Debt are excellent books, but they don't explain every detail of how the world works. I'd personally recommend reading Seeing Like a State and The Narrow Corridor if you've already read Debt and Why Nations Fail.
@BKNeifert Well, it has a lot more to do with culture, than the moving of wealth. That's one aspect is the ability for the citizens to build wealth, but it's too simple. Some nations, the citizens build wealth, but they're absolute terror to live in, because there's no law or order, and that in effect causes another nation to conquer them, like the Aztecs; or Rome when they were sacked by the Visigoths, Vandals and Goths.

There were some interesting interplay, Theodorus the Great took over Rome, dispelled with the Senate, put Boethius in prison and executed him. This led to a dark age, which again relapsed when they put Boniface to death. It's generally, when the structure becomes corrupt. And the citizens can be a whole part of that corruption. You see in Israel, when Nebuchadnezzar sacked them, they were destabilized, and alienated from their history and virtue. They had an entirely novel culture at that time. During Isaiah, you could say it was the elite, but during Jeremiah, it was just the people's fault, really. They were really bad.
