Design isn’t always a straight line.
Before Toronto's iconic City Hall was finalized, architect Viljo Revell submitted several different models as his concept for City Hall evolved.

In 1958, Toronto held an international competition to reimagine its City Hall. We've recreated the original competition models here at the CMA to help tell that story.

Model 1: Revell’s initial concept
Model 2: After feedback, more detail and formality.
Model 3: The final design, approved by City Council and now a landmark in Toronto’s skyline.

Design evolves through exploration, feedback, and iteration.

Our studio’s architectural model of Notre Dame du Haut captures the spirit of Le Corbusier’s modernist masterpiece. Light and shadow play across its sculptural surfaces, while the lifted roof corner gestures skyward, an homage to the building’s original spiritual purpose. A study in form, context, and composition one of many featured in our upcoming exhibition.

We spent this December reflecting on the work of Oscar Niemeyer (Dec 15, 1907-Dec 7, 2012) — the legendary Brazilian architect who transformed modernism with his poetic use of curves and sculptural concrete forms. A leading voice behind Brasília’s iconic identity, Niemeyer believed architecture should be free, expressive, and shaped by the curves found in nature and the human body.
“I search for surprises in my architecture. A work of art should cause the emotion of newness.”

On this day… in 1759 🏛️

The British Museum opened its doors to the public for the very first time.
Founded on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, it became the world’s first national public museum, free and open to “all studious and curious persons.”

Over 250 years later, it remains a place where global histories, cultures, and ideas continue to meet.

Georgian architecture in Toronto.

When Loyalists fled the American Revolution in the 1780s, they brought British architectural traditions with them. Log cabins came first, then brick homes fashioned after styles from the reign of the first three King Georges of England (1750-1820). These weren't just shelter, they were statements of loyalty and identity.
Once you learn to spot the symmetry, proportions, and classical details, you'll see Georgian architecture everywhere in Toronto.

Architects You Should Know: Tura Cousins Wilson
In April 2021, Toronto City Council designated Little Jamaica a Heritage Conservation District Under Study, a crucial step in protecting culturally significant neighborhoods.
Behind that decision was a collaborative report co-authored by Tura Cousins Wilson's SOCA, Black Urbanism TO, and Open Architecture Canada. The report outlined a future vision addressing affordability and cultural heritage preservation.

Architects You Should Know: Sekou Cooke
Born in Jamaica and now Director of the Master of Urban Design program at UNC Charlotte, Sekou Cooke's practice proves hip-hop architecture isn't just theory, it's being built. For his 2021 MoMA project "We Outchea," Cooke examined Syracuse's 15th Ward, once a dense Black neighborhood bulldozed for public housing, then demolished again for highways. His proposal? Sample and remix those layers of history into something new, centering the area's legacy as a public space for Black communities.
