Epictetus cured anxiety 2,000 years before therapy existed.

He was born a slave. Lame. With nothing. And he became the master whom a Roman emperor would study.

His teachings are the rawest manual for a calm mind.

7 phrases from him that still work

Epictetus did not write books. He taught by speaking, and a student took notes.

We call it the Enchiridion: the handbook. Inside, there is a system for fear, anger, and thoughts that won't stop.

And it all starts from a single idea. The most important of them all:

3

  1. "Some things are up to us and others are not."

It depends on you: your opinion, your desire, your actions.
It does not depend on you: your body, your fame, your possessions, what others do.

Almost all your anxiety comes from confusing one with the other.

4

  1. "Things do not disturb us, but our opinions about things."

It is not the traffic jam, the criticism, or the failure that distresses you.

It is your judgment: "this is terrible," "I can't stand it."

Change the opinion, and much of the pain disappears.

5

  1. "When you see someone anxious, ask yourself: what do they want that's not in their power?"

Anxiety always reveals a desire for something external: approval, an outcome, security.

Remove that unnecessary desire and anxiety runs out of fuel.

Afterward comes the core of

6

  1. "Do not pray for things to happen as you wish; wish for them to happen as they do, and you will live serenely."

Accepting reality as it is eliminates the internal struggle that generates anxiety.

It is not surrender. It is stopping the argument with what has already

7

  1. "It is not death nor pain that must be feared, but the fear of death or pain."

The problem is not the event. It is the anticipated terror.

Almost everything you fear is your own imagination projected forward.

To train yourself, start with the small things:

8

  1. "Did a little oil spill? Say: this is the price of my peace."

Every trivial annoyance is a cheap opportunity to practice not letting it disturb you.

That's how you build mental muscle for when the big stuff comes.

The last sentence strikes at the most common fear of all:

9

  1. "If you want to progress, accept seeming foolish to others."

Social anxiety arises from the fear of others' judgment.

Choose your peace over your image. That freedom is the greatest gift that exists.

Anxiety fades away when you stop clinging to what you can't control and start wanting things to be as they are.
