Most companies are building AI wrong. Here's why. Most people treat AI like one thing. It's five very different capabilities that do very different jobs. Confusing them is probably why half the implementations fail. Here's my view: 1. PREDICTIVE AI & MACHINE LEARNING The boring stuff that makes money. It reads your past data, flags risks, forecasts demand, and spots fraud. If you don't have this, you aren't ready for the rest. 2. PERCEPTION AI (DEEP LEARNING) Giving your business eyes and ears This is machine vision that finds defects on a line, or OCRs old PDFs into structured JSON. It turns the physical world into data. 3. GENERATIVE AI This one, I'm sure you know. Most teams use this to write emails or generate work documents. The real ROI is in the workflow: connecting LLMs to your internal docs (RAG) to deliver accurate answers, or generating code to unblock developers. It's a production tool, not a chatbot! 4. AUTONOMOUS AI AGENTS Today, we're moving away from "chat" into agents. These are agents with job descriptions: "Handle this refund" or "Provision this server". No human loop for the routine tasks. 5. MULTI-AGENT AI (AGENTIC AI) This is where I'm spending my time. Multiple agents working in concert, one architecting, one coding, one reviewing. It's not magic; it's just complex engineering. This is the one everyone's talking about. And honestly, it's still early. I doubt you need Level 5. I see too many companies trying to build autonomous agents when their Level 1 data infrastructure is a mess. That's like trying to build a roof before you have walls. Start where the impact is.
