What a year. Seriously, this was the best year for power metal in at least a decade, and that’s not something I say lightly. The top of the list is stuffed with titanic, instant classic level albums, and the depth of quality goes all the way into the most obscure corners of the genre with some underground, unappreciated masterpieces. I also branched out to other genres more than ever this year, so get ready for some curveballs peppered in. But this was power metal’s year, the majority of the list is still in the power/prog/symphonic realm. I hope you find a diamond in the rough somewhere in here that you didn’t catch, that makes all this work worth it! 100) **Starbynary - Romeo and Juliet Pt. 1:** Italian melodic metal that sounds almost literally like a “metal opera” with its free-flowing structure. [Prince of Cats](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nme5apkO2iA) 99) **Stormbreaker - Enlightning:** Catchy, punchy melodic metal in the Amaranthe vein that's easy to get up and move to. [In the Moment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKIPZavfT9s) 98) **Sicksense - Cross Me Twice:** Aggressive, in-your-face nu/alt metal that successfully blends a ton of different styles into an original and honest package. [Masquerade Parade](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI0GCwdbaHE) 97) **Panthalassan - From the Shallows of the Mantle**: Expansive, introspective progressive heavy metal that allows the multitalented Jake Wright the freedom to spread his wings in a solo effort. [Worth My Salt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nq4OMJChcE) 96) **Auri - III - Candles & Beginnings:** Johanna Kurkela’s delicately beautiful voice dances lightly through this soothing listen. [Shieldmaiden](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiRz_u77qwY) 95) **Fatal Embrace - Seventh Sadistic Serenade:** Rip roaring straight up thrash metal with all of the neck-snapping riffy energy that I love from the genre. [A Force You Can’t Resist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op2-ryUXLrU) 94) **Ecthirion - King of Wormwood:** A symphonic metal album that is actually structured more like a symphony than heavy metal, this should be intriguing for fans of Therion or those who just like hearing something from off the beaten path. [Tyrant](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMg_6AuDUJI) 93) **Neurotech - Exo Escapism:** Dark, atmospheric industrial metal that often feels symphonic, even as it gets heavier. [The Mark of the Beast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9obsXnoJxk) 92) **Royal Sorrow - Innerdeeps:** Powerfully emotional modern prog headlined by a soulful, passionate vocal performance. [Samsara](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEZ_N6eMcu8) 91) **Eternal Idol - Behind a Vision:** Catchy symphonic metal from Italy with dual male/female vocals, fans of Temperance will probably find a lot to like here.
